SMEC has commenced working with Tata Projects Ltd to deliver detailed design consultancy services as part of the Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) Contract at Noida International Airport.
The airport will be built with green infrastructure front of mind. Indian Green Building Council certified buildings, rainwater harvesting, zero liquid discharge sewage treatment and sophisticated waste management practices will contribute towards achieving sustainability targets.
The appointment of SMEC International, includes key design and engineering roles for parent company Surbana Jurong and sister company Robert Bird Group. Dr. Uma Maheswaran, Chief Operating Officer, SMEC South Asia and Central Asia said,

Project initiation event
The EPC scope of work includes building the terminal, runway, airside infrastructure, roads, utilities and landside facilities, as well as other ancillary buildings at the new airport. SMEC, Surbana Jurong Aviation and Robert Bird Group will undertake design verification and lead the production of construction drawings for civil infrastructure, architecture, and structural engineering for the terminal building and landside works.
Colleagues at Surbana Jurong and Robert Bird Group will develop the concept design developed by the consortium of Nordic, Haptic, Grimshaw and STUP. The concept comprises a white, translucent, wave structure inspired by the rivers of the region. Design elements have been inspired by Indian architecture. Ornamental lattice screens will animate natural light and enable natural ventilation.
Tata Projects CEO and Managing Director designate Vinayak Pai recently commented, “We are proud to be entrusted the EPC works for the greenfield Noida International Airport at Jewar. It is anticipated that the airport will be developed in four phases. With the formal commencement of the EPC contract, the first phase of the airport is on track to be delivered within three years. At the end of phase one, NIA will be capable of handling around 12 million passengers annually. This capacity will increase to 70 million at the end of phase four.

Christoph Schnellmann, Chief Executive of Yamuna International Airport recently endorsed the target completion date for phase one stating, “Together with Tata Projects, we’re working to deliver a passenger terminal, runway, and other airport infrastructure with a capacity of 12 million passengers annually, by 2024.”
Located in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, approximately 20km southeast of New Delhi, Noida International Airport will be developed and operated by Yamuna International Airport Private Limited (YIAPL). When complete, the new airport is expected to be the largest in India and the fourth largest in the world.
Zurich Airport International AG won the bid in 2019 to develop the airport and has already achieved various milestones towards the development. These include security clearance, signing of the concession agreement, selection of architects, launch of the brand identity, signing of the shareholder and state support agreements, approval on the masterplan and the development plan, financial close with SBI, selection of concessionaire to design, build and operate a fuel farm and with AAI for CNS-ATM services.
SMEC carried out the detailed engineering design services for the project, harmonizing the design and construction methodology with the adjacent North-South Commuter Railway (NSCR), another major infrastructure undertaking in the Philippines. The two projects will be built on the shared corridor of the Philippine National Railways (PNR) right of way.
