Busubi Communities Convenience Store Now Open

The SMEC Foundation is proud to support the recently completed Busubi Communities Convenience Store in Uganda – an initiative led by the Followings Foundation, with support from SMEC Alumni Ross Hitt.

Officially opened in December, the store is now fully operational, providing vital access to essential goods for the local community, including students at the nearby Busubi Empowered Communities (BEC) Learning Centre. More than just a retail outlet, this initiative represents a meaningful step toward economic empowerment and long-term self-sustainability for the community.

The project saw the transformation of a disused garage into a functioning store, with works including:

  • Structural repairs to walls, floors, and ceiling
  • Interior painting and complete electrical wiring
  • Installation of shelving, white goods, and signage
  • Initial stock of goods and setup
  • Employment of a local shop attendant

This initiative demonstrates how grassroots, community-led projects backed by targeted support can deliver long-lasting benefits. Congratulations to the Followings Foundation and all partners involved in bringing this project to life.
