Queensland’s clean energy landscape has taken a major step forward with the delivery of the ACCIONA Energía’s Aldoga Solar Farm Detailed Design project, developed in partnership with SMEC.

As one of Queensland’s largest renewable energy developments, Aldoga showcases how engineering excellence can transform underutilised land into a powerful engine of sustainable energy and regional growth.

Located near Gladstone on state-owned land leased from Economic Development Queensland, the Aldoga Solar Farm is a major contributor to Queensland’s renewable energy target of 50% by 2030 and supports Australia’s broader decarbonisation goals. As lead design consultant, SMEC played an integral role in shaping the solar farm’s design and execution, ensuring the project delivers clean energy, community benefits, and climate resilience in equal measure.

The project’s impact extends beyond energy. During construction, Aldoga is estimated to have created approximately 350 local jobs and injected $150 million into the Gladstone regional economy, through procurement, subcontracting, and the use of Australian made steel for critical infrastructure. This economic uplift supports local industries, boosts supply chain resilience, and contributes to long-term community development.

Sustainability and environmental stewardship were also embedded into the design. SMEC’s engineering approach prioritised low ecological disturbance and efficient land use, ensuring the project made a positive contribution to environmental outcomes while maintaining high energy yield. Wildlife friendly fencing and adaptive site layouts were implemented to protect local habitats and cultural heritage areas, demonstrating SMEC’s commitment to inclusive and ethical engineering.

From a technical standpoint, SMEC set new industry benchmarks by adopting a fully federated digital model hosted on Autodesk Construction Cloud (ACC). This advanced digital engineering approach enabled real-time collaboration across disciplines, civil, electrical, geotechnical, environmental, and structural, streamlining delivery, improving accuracy, and significantly reducing rework. The result: the project was delivered seven months ahead of schedule, a rare achievement for infrastructure of this scale.
