The AUD $2.52 billion, M6 Stage 1 will connect Sydney’s south to the city’s wider motorway network, providing improved journey times, reducing congestion and removing over 2,000 trucks per day from local streets.
This project will deliver twin four-kilometre underground motorway connections between President Ave, Kogarah and the M8 Motorway, Arncliffe, bypassing up to 23 sets of traffic lights. The project scope also includes mainline tunnels, exit/entry ramps, shared cyclist and pedestrian pathways and tunnel stubs for a planned future Stage 2 of the M6.
The selection of SMEC as the Independent Certifier on this key infrastructure project follows SMEC’s recent involvement in the assurance of major projects in Sydney. Bringing extensive local expertise and experience from several stages of WestConnex (M4 East and the New M8), Sydney Metro City & Southwest Tunnels, Stations and Excavations Package and more recently Sydney Gateway, SMEC has partnered with APP across numerous major assurance projects.
SMEC Australia CEO James Phillis said “We are excited to team with APP in the delivery of Independent Certifier services for the M6 Stage 1 project. This role builds on our extensive track record as a provider of Certification services in New South Wales and across Australia. We look forward to working with TfNSW and the Contractor Joint Venture to achieve successful project outcomes”.
APP’s General Manager for Highways, Bianca Diffin, says: “The M6 Stage 1 will deliver the missing link from Sydney’s south to the wider Sydney motorway network. It will significantly enhance the transport network and service Sydney’s growing population for decades to come. We’re proud to be part of such a transformational project, for the people of Sydney and the wider community.”
Work will commence in 2022 and is scheduled to be completed in 2025.
