The Afghan Ministry of Education (MoE) is committed to ensuring all Afghan children receive a primary school education by 2010.

There is an alarming lack of qualified teachers, resulting in many students receiving a substandard education. The Afghan Australian Development Organisation (AADO) with the support of the MoE has established a training program to improve the quality of teaching. The SMEC Foundation provided a grant of AU$3,000 to support the training program, which was used to purchase teaching materials and equipment for 50 teachers over a 12 week period.
