Coordinator - People & Culture

Why did you choose SMEC?

I chose SMEC because it stood out from other engineering firms. SMEC demonstrated that I would be appreciated not only as an employee but also as an individual. Its culture revolves around fostering connections, forming friendships, and personal growth in a supportive environment. Being a woman in a predominantly male-dominated field, SMEC made sure I felt secure, and I’m treated equally. From the moment I joined, SMEC welcomed me with open arms, allowing me to quickly bond with the team. They saw me for who I am as a person, not just another employee.

What do you enjoy most about the graduate program at SMEC?

Joining SMEC’s Graduate Development Program has been an enriching experience, allowing me to delve into various facets of my field on a daily basis. This emphasis on continuous learning immediately captured my attention. The program’s balance between accomplishing tasks efficiently and fostering learning appealed to me, prompting my decision to pursue the GDP at SMEC. Interacting with fellow graduates who shared similar inquiries as I did was a highlight of the program, as it enabled us to forge professional connections while enjoying workplace camaraderie. Additionally, having a mentor to connect with in the workplace added a layer of enjoyment to my experience. Through laughter, shared stories, and personal milestones, my mentor played a significant role in my journey as a graduate. Amidst the initial challenges and pressures of starting my career, my mentor showed me the importance of maintaining a work-life balance, reminding me that there’s more to life than just work.

What has surprised you about your time at SMEC so far?

The level of support extended to me for learning and development has been remarkable. I appreciate the autonomy given to me to tackle tasks independently, followed by the opportunity to provide feedback to management or seek guidance when needed. The unwavering support from the team in every situation is truly invaluable. The acknowledgment that perfection isn’t always attainable, as we’re all human and prone to mistakes, is a refreshing perspective embraced by the team.

At this stage, where do you think your SMEC adventure is going to take you?

I’m currently striving to advance to the next level in my career, with the invaluable guidance of my manager and supportive colleagues. My goal is to further my journey with SMEC, ensuring that I meet the necessary targets for my career progression. This adventure with SMEC has already been filled with unexpected twists, and I anticipate many more in the future. Thankfully, SMEC equips me with the tools to navigate these surprises, and should I find myself unprepared, there’s always someone ready to offer guidance and support along the way.

What advice would you offer to other graduates?

Set meaningful goals for yourself while also being gentle with yourself. Take the initiative to build relationships within the company, network across different teams, and connect with colleagues on a personal level. Embrace opportunities to learn new things and never hesitate to ask questions, remembering that no question is silly or has a bad outcome. Engage with fellow graduates, share laughs, and engage in conversations beyond work. Remember to relax and enjoy the adventure.
