Gateway Upgrade North
The Gateway Upgrade North project delivered an outstanding solution with a significant reduction in peak hour delays, increased safety measures and capacity to cater for projected increases in passenger and commercial vehicle usage.

The Gateway Upgrade North project widened the existing motorway from four to six lanes, include a cycleway, and developed a range of new and upgraded ramps and bridges. The project sought to address congestion and road safety issues that impacted the primary link roads to the Port of Brisbane and Brisbane Airport.

Innovative project design

As part of a design joint venture, SMEC delivered the project’s design including detailed design of all elements, geotechnical investigation management, temporary traffic design, and construction phase support.

Key considerations during the design included: managing high volumes of traffic on an existing motorway, widening an existing motorway over soft soils and sensitive environment and innovation in delivery to minimise adverse impact on road users.
