Byron Bay Interchange
SMEC specialist teams in partnership with Transport for NSW delivered a design which provides improved transport services for the community.

Transport for NSW is constructing a new Interchange at Byron Bay. The project forms part of the Transport Access Program, an NSW Government initiative to provide a better experience for public transport customers by delivering accessible, modern, secure and integrated transport infrastructure.

This program includes the design for six stations throughout New South Wales, including Albury, Coffs Harbour, Orange, Tamworth and Wagga Wagga and Byron Bay. The scope of each station is to provide improved, multi-modal interchanging, disabled parking and access, traffic flow and parking arrangements, lighting of precinct and platform, and general safety for all customers and staff.

The Byron Bay Interchange project includes the provision of three dedicated stops for regional coaches within the interchange, associated customer facilities such as covered canopies, shelters and waiting areas, provision of a disability car parking spot, “kiss and ride” bays and taxi bays, public amenities, accessible paths to key interchange elements and landscaped areas within the interchange.

SMEC’s Team of Specialists

SMEC provided a collaborative team of specialists across the disciplines of architecture, urban design, roads, civil, environment and sustainability to develop the design of the Byron Bay Interchange in partnership with our client, Transport for New South Wales.

The location of the Byron Bay Interchange presented challenges due to site conditions and stakeholder requirements, which saw the location of the interchange moved and the design revised to produce an outcome which met the needs of the client and the community. The site has a significant interface with the Byron Bay Bypass project, the existing rail line and heritage listed water tower erected in 1894, all of which added to the complexity of this project.

Improved transport services for the community

This project is an outstanding example of SMEC specialist teams collaborating with our clients to achieve project success, delivering a design which will provide improved transport services for the community.
