Digital Learning Project
The SMEC Foundation recently supported AFFLIP (Australian Foundation for Fostering Learning in the Philippines) to provide laptops for students across 15 elementary schools in the Talomo Districts of Davao City. This pilot program is equipping Grade 4 to 6 students with essential digital literacy skills - preparing them for a technology-driven future.

Since 2016, SMEC Philippines has proudly partnered with AFFLIP as part of its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) program, supporting initiatives that have reached over 21,000 students across 15 schools in Davao City. The local team has played a vital role in delivering educational and infrastructure projects – from food gardens and play-based learning spaces to aquaponics systems and digital literacy programs – leaving a lasting impact on schools and communities throughout the Talomo district.

In 2024, the SMEC Foundation strengthened this effort by funding the AFFLIP Digital Learning Project through the provision of 47 refurbished laptops, helping to expand access to technology in public schools. Originally launched by AFFLIP in early 2023, this pioneering pilot program equips grade 4 to 6 students with essential digital literacy skills – preparing them for a technology-driven future.

Grade 6 students use these laptops for digital learning, acquiring foundational skills in computer operations, word processing, spreadsheets, and graphic resources. This exposure significantly enhances their confidence and preparedness for secondary education.

SMEC is proud to be part of this meaningful initiative. Investing in digital literacy ensures that young learners are prepared for the challenges and opportunities of an increasingly digital world.

AFFLIP Board members have also delivered two comprehensive workshops for teachers appointed as Digital Learning Coordinators across the 15 participating schools. The sessions were well-received, with Coordinators expected to cascade their learnings to colleagues at their respective schools. In addition, the Talomo region has held further training focused on cybersecurity, child digital safety, and effective use of the Microsoft ecosystem in the classroom.

Alastair Douglas, Founder of AFFLIP, emphasised the project’s impact, stating, “The Digital Learning Project is opening doors for young students in ways we never imagined. Through SMEC’s support, we are providing children with crucial skills that will set them up for future success.”
