In response to an appeal from the University of New South Wales, the SMEC Foundation provided AU$4,000 towards the purchase of building materials for the construction of a science wing at the isolated Ikumbo School in eastern Kenya.

Volunteers from the University’s Warrane College journeyed to Kenya to assist the local community build the stone, timber and metal roofed structure which, for the first time, will allow the teaching of science to the school’s 160 pupils. The volunteers worked for several weeks in late 2008 to complete the building which was officially opened by Australia’s High Commissioner to Kenya.
